When i first watched this, I was at the Grosvenor Cinema in Glasgows Wet End with my boyfriend, we heard that many film critics had been calling Hereditary 'this generations The Exorcist' due to the new elements of how to scare watchers which has helped redefine the horror genre. In mine and Chris's opinion, this is probably the scariest horror film of the year, perhaps the most out of them all. With creepy music and camera techniques throughout, the complex story keeps you watching.
Hereditary isn't your typical horror film where you go tot he cinema to get scared and laugh at how you jumped, this film gets in your head and leaves you deep dispart and alarmed at what you've watched. This film makes you think and connect everyone together, also with the disturbing recurring sound of clicking from the main character Charlie, that sound still stays with me and still scares me to this day.
I won't say very much about the plot of the film due to it being complex and just too good to give any hints away about what goes on. The film follows a family who's lost a grandmother, who was the head of the family, she was known to have a mental illness which resulted sin a sour relationship between her and her daughter Annie (Toni Collette). Annie and her Husband Steve (Gabriel Byrne), who is the more cautious of the two, have two children, the older Peter (Alex Wolff) who is a High School stoner boy and a younger girl Charlie (Milly Shapiro) who is quiet and keeps to herself. There is a a lot of unspoken history talked about in the household which causes everyone to walk on eggshells, but unknown to them an event will occur which they will never regain happiness after. Throughout the film there is that constant fear that something will happen, when in fact its the cleaver use of music and camera angles which intensifies that feeling.
If you have guessed already I would highly recommend this film for those who are a fan of the horror/thriller genre, but if you're not so much of a fan, then maybe skip this one.
